Trapshooting the Olympic Way, Part 3

Lester L. Greevy, Jr.

In the last two months, we've talked about USA Shooting's Junior
Olympic Program and the various National and International Competition
Teams run by USAS, but International Trap Shooting also exists on the
recreational level. USA Shooting maintains averages and has classes.
Classification cards are sent once per year only to those who have the
equivalent of 3 courses of fire the previous year. It sanctions shoots
including state, zone and national championships, and just like in the
ATA, many shooters participate in International Trap Shooting solely
for the enjoyment of the game, with no intention of competing for an
Olympic Team birth.

USAS has regulations and rules, the purpose of which is to provide a
national system of fair, uniform, enforceable standards for the
conduct of shooting competitions in the Olympic and ISSF events in the
United States and for the conduct of special and developmental events
which promote participation and athlete development in the Olympic and
ISSF Shooting events.

All USA Shooting sanctioned competitions are recognized as preliminary
tryout events (PTO) for the USA Shooting National Championships,
providing ISSF events are conducted. Preliminary tryouts are open to
all shooters meeting USA Shooting eligibility requirements. In the
past, PTO's had a certain status in that if a minimum score were shot,
an automatic invitation to the National Championships would be issued.
With the Nationals program, schedule, and entry forms now on the USAS
website, this is no longer done.

Adult, Collegiate and Junior participants in USA Shooting sanctioned
matches must be individual members of USA Shooting. Non-resident,
non-US citizens are not required to be USA Shooting members if they
are current members of their own National Shooting Federation.

USA Shooting recognizes and encourages competitions with Junior events
or special Junior awards in open events to promote youth shooting and
shooter development. Juniors are shooters who will be under the age of
21 on December 31st of the year of the competition. Juniors are
divided into three classes; Juniors'J1 (18-20), Intermediate Junior'J2
(15-17) and Sub-Junior'J3 (14 and under).

USA Shooting recognizes and encourages competition in Master Age
Groups, as a means of promoting life long participation in the
shooting sports, again there are 3 classes of Seniors; S1 (45-54), S2
(55-64) and Veteran, those who have reached the age of 65, anytime
during the calendar year of a competition.

USA Shooting also recognizes shooter categories, which may be used by
competition sponsors to promote participation and recognition of
shooters in those categories, they include; Collegiate, who are
regularly enrolled undergraduate students who carry 12 or more
semester hours in an accredited 2 or 4 year college, and who have not
received a bachelor's degree.

Scholastic, includes regularly enrolled students in a primary and
secondary school.

Military, includes members of the United States Armed Forces, active
or reserved components or National Guard.

Supported Shooters means present members of the National Team or
National Development Team and military shooters who receive government
support and whose primary or secondary military duty assignment is
shooting.

Independent (non-supported) shooters are those who do not receive
training or competition support as defined in supported shooters.

Disabled shooters may participate as regular participants in or in
special disabled shooting events. USA Shooting sanctioned competition
organization committee's are encouraged to accommodate disabled
shooters in their competitions

USA Shooting also operates a classification system after a shooter has
completed 100 targets. Like ATA, the classification runs from AA, at
the highest (91 and above for; Trap'87 and above for Double Trap) down
to E at the lowest. And like ATA, a competition director may invoke
the "known ability" rule and consider scores shot outside of
sanctioned competition for classifying.

As you can see, the recreational shooting side of USA Shooting and
International Trap is not dissimilar to ATA. But the International
Trap Shooting family is a small one, by my account there are only 19
active public Bunkers in the United States. What follows is a list of
those Bunkers, the name and phone number for contact person and a
website or E-mail address, if available. Why not find one near you,
give them a call to check their schedule and go see what it is all
about. Maybe even shoot some Bunker. It's a very exciting sport. You
may enjoy it.

Next month, we will talk about the differences between International
and ATA

Trap.
